Guwahati, 23rd August- As India marks a historic milestone in its space exploration journey with the maiden celebration of National Space Day, the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST) has taken several initiatives to celebrate the success through a month-long program, spearheaded by the Director of IASST, Prof. Ashis Kr. Mukherjee and the IASST scientific fraternity, including Assoc. Prof. Dr. Biswajit Choudhury, Chief Coordinator of the program.
“As we deepen our understanding of space science, we not only broaden our horizons but also contribute to global knowledge, ensuring that India remains at the forefront of space exploration and scientific advancement”- stated Prof. Mukherjee.
The celebrations commenced on August 13, 2024, with an educational visit to the Guwahati Planetarium, where students from Telelia High School watched a movie on celestial space, followed by an interactive session. Additionally, on August 15, 2024, IASST organized a screening of the documentary “Our Fascinating Universe: A Journey Through the Marvelous Galaxies” at the institute’s auditorium. The Director of IASST, staff, faculties, and children attended the session. Subsequently, on August 20, an online speech competition on space science for B.Sc., M.Sc., and PhD students from various colleges and universities in Guwahati was held. The month-long celebration continued with a telescopic sky observation session on August 22 at the IASST Observatory, open to local residents and students from neighbouring areas.
The grand finale of the celebrations took place on August 23, featuring a popular talk session by Dr. Yogesh Chandra Joshi, Scientist-F at the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES), Nainital. Prof Neelotpal Sen Sarma, HoD PSD, IASST, inaugurated the session. Dr. Joshi delivered an online lecture titled “Quest for New Habitable Worlds,” which captivated the audience with discussions on the latest advancements in the search for life beyond Earth.
