International Women’s Day Celebration at IASST

On March 9, 2026, the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST) in Guwahati held a vibrant celebration for International Women’s Day at the IASST Auditorium. Organized by the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), the event featured the thought-provoking theme “Women and Girls in Science and Awareness of the POSH Act,” honoring the remarkable achievements of women while promoting gender equality and ensuring workplace safety. Most of the staff members, including research scholars and faculty, participated in the Program.

The Program began with a welcome address by Prof. Devasish Chowdhury, Professor and Director I/C, IASST, and Prof. Munima B. Sahariah, Professor and Chairperson, ICC, IASST.

The Program was graced by two eminent speakers who offered profound insights to the enthusiastic audience. The first to take the stage was Dr. Susheela Negi, a distinguished Scientist F in the Department of Science and Technology for the Government of India. Dr. Negi captivated attendees with her discussion of various government initiatives designed to empower women, particularly in education, science, and research. She elaborated on funding programs, legislative advancements, and the myriad opportunities available to women scientists to engage in and lead groundbreaking research. Her passion for empowering the next generation of female scientists was palpable and deeply inspiring.

Following Dr. Negi’s enlightening session, Mrs. Violet Baruah, a retired Indian Police Service officer and former Inspector General of Police for the Government of Assam, took the podium. She delivered an insightful presentation on the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act and its significance within the workplace. Mrs. Baruah meticulously explained the legal obligations under the POSH Act, highlighting the critical need to create a respectful and secure work environment. Drawing on her extensive experience, she underscored the vital roles and responsibilities of both institutions and individuals in curbing sexual harassment, as well as the necessity for effective mechanisms that allow individuals to report and address such incidents.

The event culminated in an interactive session where attendees engaged in thoughtful discussions with the speakers. Topics covered included women’s empowerment, safety in professional spaces, and the boundless opportunities available in the realm of science. This interactive dialogue fostered a sense of community and encouraged attendees to share their own experiences and ideas.

Overall, the celebration served as a significant platform for acknowledging the invaluable contributions of women while reinforcing the importance of equality, awareness, and a safe working environment for all. The day’s events left a lasting impression on everyone present, invigorating their commitment to supporting and advocating for women in science and beyond.

The Program was ended with a vote of thanks by Dr. Asis Bala, Associate Professor and Member Secretary ICC.
