Prof. Ashis K. Mukherjee, currently on deputation from Tezpur University, has been serving as the second-consecutive term as the Director of the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST), Guwahati. He holds a B.Sc. Chemistry (Hons) in 1990 and M.Sc. in Biochemistry from Banaras Hindu University in 1992, securing first-class first rank in the order of merit in both the examinations and received the University Gold Medal. He received a PhD in 1998 from the Dept of Biochemistry, Burdwan Medical College, Burdwan University, and a DSc in Biotechnology from Calcutta University in 2017.
Prof. Mukherjee has been a faculty member of the Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (MBBT) of Tezpur University ( a central government university) since 1997, an Outstanding Professor of the the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR: an Indian institute of national importance), and an Adjunct Faculty at the School of Biosciences, University of Northern Colorado, USA. He was the Head and Coordinator of the Department of MBBT (2008-2011), Head of ONGC-Center for Petroleum Biotechnology, Tezpur University, from 2008 to 2011, and 2014 to 2016, Head and Coordinator of DBT Nodal Cell for Medical Colleges and Biomedical Research Institutes of NE India since September 2009 to 2018, and Dean, Research and Development of Tezpur University from 2016 to 2019.
Prof. Mukherjee is globally recognized for pioneering research in snake venom biochemistry, toxinology and industrial microbiology. His current research interest includes biochemical, pharmacological and proteomic analyses of snake venom; quality assessment of commercial antivenom; detection of snake and scorpion bites; development of new generation of antivenom against snake venom; pharmacological re-assessment of medicinal plants used against snake and scorpion bite treatment and neurodegenerative diseases; cardiovascular, and anticancer drug discovery from natural resources, including snake venom; industrially important microbial enzymes and biosurfactant.
He has received several awards and accolades for his academic and research achievements, such as the ISCA Young Scientist Award, DST BOYASCAST Fellowship, DBT Crest Award, DBT National Bioscience Award, DBT Tata Innovation Fellowship, INSA Teachers Award, ICMR Award for biomedical research, Visitor’s Award for Research in Basic and Applied Sciences from the Honorable President of India in 2018, and ANRF-J. C. Bose Research Grant in 2026 and many more.
He is a fellow of the Indian Academy of Science, Bangalore; National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI), Pragyaraj; Indian National Sciecne Academy (INSA), New Delhi; National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS), New Delhi; Royal Society of Biology, London; Royal Society of Chemistry, London, and West Bengal Academy of Science and Technology, Kolkata. Dr. Mukherjee has guided 21 research scholars for Ph.D. degrees, currently guiding 8 PhD scholars, 40 M. Sc. dissertations and has published more than 200 research papers in peer-reviewed International journals, book chapters, and review articles. He has received over 13,400 citations for his work with an h-index of 65. Prof. Mukherjee has been ranked one of the top 2% scientists of the world from 2021 to 2025. He is also a DBT, ICMR, and World Health Organization task force member on preventing and treating snakebite envenoming.
Prof. Mukherjee served/has been serving as a member in the Scientific and Academic council, Executive council, and Governing council of several Universities and Institutions, resource person and invited speaker in numerous national and international conferences, and in the editorial board of several peer-reviewed journals. He is currently serving as the Vice-President of the Society of Biological Chemists of India (2026-2027).
