Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST), Guwahati, Assam celebrated World Diabetes Day 2022 on 14th November 2022 with the theme “Access to Diabetes Education.” The event was organized on the National celebration of the 75th year of India’s Independence- “Azaki Ka Amrut Mahotsava.” The faculty members, research scholars, postdoctoral and project fellows, and administrative staff participated in the event.
Professor Ashis K. Mukherjee, Director IASST inaugurated the event and emphasized the necessity of systematic study and research to conquer the disease. He has opined that millions of people with diabetes worldwide do not have access to diabetes care. He invites everyone to raise awareness of the need to expand diabetes diagnosis and treatment services across the Country as part of the strengthening of the health system.
The renowned clinician, Dr. Manas P Baruah, Director and Head, Department of Diabetes, Endocrine & Metabolic Disease, Apollo Excelcare Hospital, Guwahati, Assam, delivered the invited talk. He explained the seriousness of Diabetes and its complications and the way forward include the s generation of awareness about the serious nature of the disease among the general public, early diagnosis of diabetes by screening high-risk groups and people with symptoms, recognition of the complications of diabetes and a logical, scientific as well as a holistic approach to the treatment of diabetes. Dr. Baruah has explained the evolutionary pathway and gene-related explanation of Type 2 diabetics. He expressed his concern that the alarming increase in the diabetic population is a public health concern and calls for measures to tackle this problem. As prevention is always better than cure, adopting of a healthy lifestyle will go a long way in reducing the burden of the disease. On this occasion, Dr. Suman Dasgupta, Assistant Professor, Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Tezpur University, Assam, also delivered an invited scientific research-oriented talk on “Type 2 Diabetes: An Immune-Metabolic Disorder”
